Home use rights for Microsoft products

Home use rights under the Select licence

The Select licence lets you provide the Office series for home use to all employees or teachers who have their own designated workstation. He or she must be the primary user of the workstation (80% of the time it is used). Home use rights are the same as the user rights at the establishment’s workstation. For instance, if teachers use Office Enterprise 2007 at work, they can acquire the same version to be installed on their personal computers. When referring to at-home rights, it is understood that the establishment authorizes its employees to continue work at home that has previously been undertaken at work while using the same versions (applications and operating systems).

How are these rights distributed?

According to the stipulations of the Microsoft contract, it is forbidden to reveal your Volume Licence Key (VLK). Because these keys limit installation, it is absolutely forbidden to copy a CD and give the licence key to another user in order for that user to install the software at home. Microsoft offers two options:

  1. The user brings his personal computer to the establishment’s technical support staff so that an authorized technician can install the software.
  2. The user purchases a CD with a unique licence key.

Purchasing a CD with a unique licence key is the simplest way of providing this service. The institution is released of all responsibility and requires no support.

It is important for users to be aware of the limitations of this licence for home use. The software must be used for working purposes only. It is forbidden to use the software for lucrative purposes, or for others to use it (spouse, children, or a private business). Users must de-install the licence once their employment at the establishment has ended. For this reason, Microsoft suggests a standard contract between the institution and the employee (change “CAMPUS 3.5″ for “Select” in the form).

Home use rights under the Campus licence

For each product under a Campus licence, you are given home use rights. During the period of validity of the licence, users who are members of the teaching or support staff, authorized to use the program at school, also have the right to use a copy at home. When referring to at-home rights, it is understood that the establishment authorizes its employees to continue work at home that has previously been undertaken at work, while using the same versions (applications and operating systems).

The establishment has two distribution options.

1. The WAH (Work At Home) plan

This plan includes the same rules as the Select licence, however differ as to the products covered by the plan. For instance, if you have chosen the option for Desktop, Visio Pro and Project in your agreement with Campus, home use rights will apply for the following products: Office and Windows OS (included in Desktop), Visio Pro and Project Pro. Home use rights are restricted to the same version as the one installed at the establishment’s workstation. It is important for users to be aware of the limitations of this licence for home use. The software must be used for working purposes only. It is forbidden to use the software for lucrative purposes, or for others to use it (spouse, children, a private business). Users must de-install the licence once their employment at the establishment has ended. For this reason, Microsoft suggests a standard contract between the institution and the employee.

2. The HUP (Home Use Program) plan:

This plan is available to clients who benefit from the advantages of Software Assurance. The service must be activated by the program administrator through Microsoft’s VLSC site. Once the service has been activated, users will be able to order and pay for the product directly online. There are no limitations: these products can be used for personal or commercial purposes. This plan only applies to the Office series.

Once the service has been activated, you are no longer authorized to distribute Office under the WAH plan (unique CD key). All users must download the software online and pay by credit card.
